This project maps nine days of garbage I consumed. From january 30th to february 7th 2026 I photographed every piece of waste I produced. I compiled each day’s trash into a gif file using procreate, drawing focus to the form and material of each individual piece by removing the background of every image. The map, in its early phase, was chronological. Each of the nine days paints a portrait of the day I lived through my waste. In this process of documentation, I considered these individual pieces in the context of their lifecycles as objects: where they came from before entering my hands and where they will end up after I dispose of them. It also made me consider more design choices in objects intended to be disposable, in function, material, and other factors that make each object unique. The ideas I’ve gathered in the collection and assembly of these gifs blended into the next phase of this project, which centered around the re-categorization of this visual information, shifting from time-based to other categorizations. This site is a home for the categories of consideration for my waste: their functions, materials, and colors. Each of those factors are what classify each disposed object as unique, and paint a portrait of when, why, what, and how I interact with my trash: visually, practically, and physically.
In having worked with and considered the lifespan and details of my garbage, I invite you to do the same, even if it’s just bringing more awareness and acknowledgement to the form and function of each object you encounter that is disposable. It’ll teach you something about the world around you.
